Super fresh uniform grouping just purchased at the last Dalton (Chickamauga) Civil War Show !  This is the frock coat and trousers of Andrew Winters who enlisted on March 1, 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Tennessee (Union) Infantry (designated the 1st Tennessee (Union) Cavalry November 1, 1862).  This grouping is fresh from the family, purchased by a dealer/picker who stated he had been trying to buy it for MANY months!  The set consists of a fine grade, early War broadcloth frock coat and matching trousers and a post-War cabinet card inscribed "Capt. Andrew Winter".  The frock coat has eagle "I" infantry buttons on it (missing one on the front) and a very unique super dark blue velvet overcollar and overcuffs (functional), perhaps made to mimic the coat worn by the Colonel of the unit, J.P. Brownlow.  The dealer/picker stated he thought the family had a set of shoulder bars from the coat and advised he would let me know if he managed to get them.  As the rank on the image indicated Winters was a Captain, a set of original early War rank bars were tacked into place for display purposes.  Of great interest are the trousers, whose seat (as shown) show MANY hours of being in the saddle!  Winters served actively until November 6, 1863 at which time he mustered into the Invalid Corps, later known as the Veteran Reserve Corps.  His archive records have been ordered.  The biggest battle for the unit during Winters' tenure was Chickamauga (September 19-20, 1863).   This is a great early War set from a unit formed in Kentucky and designated as Tennessee Union forces.
