Manufactured by N.P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts, this carbine is called a "Jenks" mule ear and was in production from 1841 until 1845. It is US Navy issue and saw service in both the Mexican and Civil Wars. It is a sidehammer breechloader, very unique in design, and relatively scarce.
